Session For New GHOSTBUSTERS Movie
Hey Everybody!
Sorry that I haven't posted in awhile.
July was filled with fun sessions, live gigs and an interview that I will be posting here soon.
This post is about a session I did for film composer Teddy Shapiro. Teddy and I have worked on one other movie in the past. I was really happy to get the call to work with him again for the new Ghostbusters movie coming in 2016.
The session was fun and a HUGE challenge for myself. It was also a reunion of sorts bringing together friends that I haven’t seen in a very long time. It was really cool to be in the same room again with composer Teddy Shapiro, engineer Chris Fogel, bassist Lance Morrison and guitarist Phil X!
Lance and I worked with engineer Chris Fogel for the 1st time way back in 1994 on Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill. We’ve done a few sessions together since then but I’m talking maybe 15 years a go. YIKES!!! I hate how time flies sometimes. I posted the making of Alanis’ record in my blog. I was happy to hear that guitarist Phil X was on the session too! I've done a ton of jingle sessions with Lance and Phil during the early 2000s. Phil is an amazing guitarist that has been touring with Bon Jovi for awhile now. Happy to see friends doing good in this crazy biz.
The 2 songs for the movie were thrash/speed metal songs. I got in touch with the composer Teddy Shapiro to ask if he had a band or song in mind that I could check out to prepare myself for the session. Graciously, he offered to send me the demos and charts a few days ahead of time. “Thank you Teddy!!!”
This allowed me to spend hours in my practice room shedding the drum parts.
On the day of the session I was ready for the challenge. It was no easy task but we got it!!!
I hope that the scene and music stays in the movie. You never know what’s going to end up on the editing room floor.
The session was at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, CA where many great rock n' roll bands have mixed and recorded their records. Bands like The Doors, Van Halen, and the mighty Led Zeppelin.
Here's a shot of a young VH recording Van Halen 2 in the same room as I'm pictured in above. Just a different corner and with not so many beer cans. (Had to have been staged by Roth.) :o)
I've worked in this town long enough to know that you shouldn't count on anything until you see it with your own eyes. I hope all the hard work we did "stays in the picture!!!!" (Thank you Robert Evans.)
For now, all I can say is that it was an awesome way to get together with friends that I haven’t seen in a very long time!
